Light Origami: A Kaleidoscopic Art Installation by KAZ Shirane

Golden A' Design Award Winner Transforms Space with Interactive Light and Mirrors

Renowned artist KAZ Shirane has created a unique interactive art installation, Light Origami, that invites viewers to explore the nature of reality by stepping into a giant 3D kaleidoscope. This innovative design, which won the Golden A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award in 2016, uses light and mirrors to create a multidimensional experience that explores the relationship between the participant and space.

Light Origami is a domed structure bathed in light, constructed using over 320 origami shapes made from mirror panels. The changing spectrums of light projected within the space create an effect similar to being inside a kaleidoscope. The interior space seems to spread eternally, with no discernible edge, creating a unique and mesmerizing experience for the viewer.

The installation was inspired by Shirane's desire to create an interactive space that people could design for themselves. This led to the development of a 3D kaleidoscope concept, with Light Origami being the third prototype based on this idea. The design is unique in its interactive nature, with the interior design being shaped by the actions of those within the work.

Constructed from 330 aluminium composite panels and 1,000 bolts, the installation covers an area of 28.26 square meters, with a diameter of 6 meters and a height of 3.5 meters. The project was exhibited in Sydney in May 2015, in Scottsdale, USA in February 2016, and in Singapore in March 2016.

Shirane's design faced several creative and technical challenges. The concept of creating a free-standing object that was stable enough for public use required significant research and development. The solution was found in the use of Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP), which allowed for the structure, construction method, and surface to be realized in one way. The assembly took two days.

In conclusion, Light Origami is a testament to the power of design and innovation in transforming space and creating unique, interactive experiences. The installation not only won the prestigious Golden A' Design Award but also represents a significant advancement in the field of interactive space design. As KAZ Shirane's work demonstrates, the possibilities for art and design are as limitless as the reflections in a kaleidoscope.
